Overview
Kyvos supports grouping dimension attributes data members into logical, user-defined groups on MOLAP Semantic Models. This feature enables users to organize related data members into meaningful business categories for easier analysis and reporting. For example, when analyzing sales by country, users may group the USA, Canada, and Mexico into a logical group called North America. Similarly, countries such as France, Germany, and Italy can be grouped into Europe.
Once created, the logical group field becomes a new dimension attribute and can be used across worksheets and dashboards.
Key capabilities
This feature enables users to:
Create logical groups of dimension attributes
Organize data into business-relevant categories
Use group fields in filters, sorting, highlighting, and visualizations
Reuse groups across worksheets and dashboards
Export dashboards and worksheets containing grouped data
All logical group fields are saved at the workbook level and remain available across workbook entities.
Points to know
Grand totals may not update according to the measure filter or LVS rule applied.
Users may get incorrect totals when dimension members are grouped with "Unknown".
Creating calculated measures using groups and writeback functionality are not supported.
Creating a logical group field
Users can create logical groups at the workbook level by selecting members from a dimension attribute.
To create a logical group field, perform the following steps.
Select a semantic model in the workbook.
Click the Actions menu (…) and select Groups. The Group Fields dialog is displayed.
On the dialog box, do the following:
Enter a unique Group Field Name.
Select the required semantic model from the list.
From the Field list, choose the dimension attribute on which grouping will be performed.
Select multiple members that should belong to a logical group. The system displays all data members for the selected dimension attribute.
Double-click the selected members and provide the name of the group.
While creating a logical group field, users can choose an option to automatically group all non-selected members into an Other group. This option helps users compare defined groups with the remaining data.
Select multiple members that should belong to a logical group.
Click Apply to save the group configuration. After saving, the logical group field will be added as a new dimension attribute in the dimension list.
All logical group fields are saved at the workbook level. Once created, they become available across:
Worksheets
Dashboards
Filters and sorting configurations
Highlight and analysis operations
This ensures consistent grouping logic across all analyses within the workbook.
Worksheets and dashboards that use logical group fields can be exported normally. Logical group fields will be preserved in the exported visualizations.
Creating a group field by selecting data members
To create a logical group field by selecting data members, perform the following steps.
Select a semantic model in the workbook.
Select the required View type. The following procedure demonstrates with the Bar type.
Click the Ctrl Key to select multiple attributes in bar chart that you want to group. Right-click the bar chart, point to Group Members > and then click the name of the attribute. The Create Group Field dialog box is displayed.
The Field list is disabled as you already selected it when choosing data members.
Select multiple members that should belong to a logical group. The system displays all data members for the selected dimension attribute.
Double-click the selected members and provide the name of the group.
Click Create. The group is created.
Editing a group field
A group field can be edited from the dimension list in the worksheet. To modify a group field,
To edit a group field, perform the following steps.
Go to the Worksheet, expand Dimension, and right-click the required group field and select Edit Group Field. The Edit Group Field dialog is displayed. This allows you to update the configuration of the selected group field.
On the Edit Group Fields dialog, you can edit the following:
Group field name
Change the group name
Group or ungroup members
Click Apply. The modification to the group field will be displayed.
Deleting a group field
To delete a group, perform the following steps.
Click the Actions menu (…) and select Groups. The Group Fields dialog is displayed.
In the Group Fields pane, right-click the group and then click delete. The confirmation dialog is displayed.
Click Delete. The group is now deleted.
Data Security Considerations
Masking and low-volume suppression are not supported together.
If any member within the group becomes invalid due to unconditional masking, then the masked members will be moved to the “Others Members"
If any member within the group becomes invalid due to conditional masking, then the masked member will either moved to the “Others Members" or will remain as individual record (if the "other category" is not defined by the user while creating group)
In case of measure masking, measure values contribute to the dynamic member group as per the defined data security rule.
Low volume suppression is applied on measure values of the grouped members.
